Kristi's 2021 September Health and Fitness Page

Greetings all! I pray you are well and staying safe as we continue past a year and a half into the pandemic.  May we focus on staying health, choosing wisely,  yet too, finding time
to safely do the things we love to do with the people we love.  We have held off on morning breakfasts during the pandemic but continue with bike rides. Let me know if you'd like to join!

The numbers are in!  The purple Pumpers raised nearly $10,000 this year bringing our total through the years to around $165,000  thanks to all of our generous donors!!

Social Update
While we have paused indoor dining events, the outdoor biking events have remained. We plan on doing the Autumn Trek ride in River Falls on September 19th and will have our final Fall ride the weekend of October 9th-10th. Let me know if you are interested!

         Health and Fitness Information

** This month's Experience magazine cites a recent study at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  The study found that sedentary children were at least 5 times more likely to develop metabolic syndrome (which may be a precursor to diabetes) than the active children.  Remember, fitness and healthy habits are life long!!

**According to WebMD.. Here are 10 Fitness facts to encourage you to keep up that fitness regimen!
1.  Exercise Boosts Brain Power: There are a number of studies related to this fact.. I posted a reference to a study related to exercise decreasing / preventing the onset of dementia a few months ago.

2. Motivation Melts Away Stress:  There are a number of stress reducing effects of exercise including the elicitation of the relaxation response.  As you may realize, exercise at times can be calming, and at other times energizing (i.e. when you come to 6am class tired as you enter and geared up for the day when you leave!)

3. Exercise Gives you Energy: This can be both in the short and long term as over time you become conditioned and increase endurance!

4. It's not that Hard to Find Time for Exercise:  Remember, it is important to make time for yourself.  Building exercise into a routine is imperative.  In addition, you can incorporate small amounts of exercise throughout the day such as via parking further away or taking the stairs.

5.  Fitness Can Help Build Relationships:  Not only is fitness great for stress relief and as a mood elevator, we too have developed an aerobic family over the years!! In addition, pairing up with friends can be motivating!

6. Exercise Can Help Ward off Disease:  Studies have shown the beneficial effects of exercise on a number of health conditions and diseases including heart attack, diabetes, stroke, and obesity.

7. Fitness Helps Pump up your Heart: Fitness of course is not only important for skeletal muscle strength and endurance, yet too for that all important muscle, the heart!!

8. Exercise Helps Let you Eat More:  Exercise not only burns off calories, it too boosts the metabolism so you burn off more calories!!

9. Exercise Boosts Performance:  Performance may be enhanced in many ways including sports performance, energy level, and mood!

10.  Weight Loss is not the Only Exercise Goal: Exercise for all the wonderful benefits!!!

**May we continue to practice healthy habits and good public health during the pandemic.
