July Health and Fitness Web Page

Greetings all! I hope you are well and safe amidst
the pandemic. It can be difficult maintaining activities while
safely distancing. Remember to wear your mask! The
Purple Pumpers did have a virtual MS 150 event and too some of us
got together for a couple of distanced bike rides. Though it
wasn't the same as having the actual MS 150, it was very nice to
get back on the trails with friends. We too will have a
couple more rides. Please note, our morning breakfasts will
not resume until there is far more safety amidst the
pandemic. We miss those gatherings though!

Special Thanks!

Thanks to all of those who still supported the Purple Pumpers
amidst the virtual ride and as we held our own ride. Over
the 25 years we have now gathered over $155,000. -
Although this year was our 25th- during our 26th year (next
year), we will still celebrate our 25th! - If you are interested
in joining us let me know, we will have some openings on the
team!
A couple of pics from last year's team followed by a couple of
pics of this year's rides thus far!

Finally- though I was scheduled to be in Florida and Cuba at the
end of June/ early July, that trip is postponed to next
year. Dad and I had the opportunity to go up and visit
family and take care of family matters in Northern
Michigan. I leave you with some of the beauty of the Upper
Pennisula! Blessings!

Health and Fitness Information
1.
The #1 health and fitness information in this pandemic
is to PLEASE follow the CDC guidelines, wear a mask in
public and indoor spaces, maintain appropriate social
distancing, get tested if you have been in contact with
someone with COVID-19 or have been to a large gathering,
and self-quarantine for 14 days if exposed. If you have
any of the symptoms at all, please consult your health
professional.
2. In perusing an old
Experience Life magazine, it has some wonderful
information. For those with low back pain, the
magazine suggested:
(a) Don't sleep on your stomach because it puts more
strain on your low back, (b) When sitting keep feet
planted on floor and knees bent, extending the legs
out in front too far can put strain on the low back,
(c) Remember to take frequent breaks, especially if
you are at a computer, sitting, or driving for
extended periods of time, and (d) When rising from a
sitting position, use your hips and legs for support
to get to the standing position.
3. Experience Life magazine cited a Journal of the
American Medical Association study from the
University of Copenhagen that looked at the effects
of inactivity. The study found that reducing
activity for only two weeks resulted in
significantly higher levels of glucose and fat in
the bloodstreams of the participants. Such
effects can lead to a multitude of medical risks
including that of diabetes and heart disease.
4. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential in the diet to
help reduce inflammation and too protect against
heart disease. Fatty fish such as salmon and tuna
along with canola oil, walnuts, flaxseed, and green
leafy vegetables are all good sources of Omega 3.
5. According to the Society for Neuroscience,
nearly 2/3 of ailments presenting in doctors offices
are often stress related. Many diseases of
meaning such as heart attacks, GI problems, and
mental health concerns have direct ties to
stress. In our busy lives, let us find time
for plenty of rest, good nutrition, sleep,
exercise... and take time for yourself to do the
things you enjoy with the people you love!
6. Although many gyms have started to reopen, keep
in mind they are rated on the higher end of the risk
spectrum during the pandemic. It is highly important
to keep safe distancing, wash your hands, and when
possible, wear a mask. We don't want to expose
ourselves while trying to stay healthy! In addition,
be sure to get approval from yur physician or health
professional- many people have pre-existing
conditions that put them at high risk should they
contract Covid-19.

May blessings and beauty touch your day!
